It was Darcey's birthday last week and I can't quite believe that my little baby is 2 already. She is SO grown up. Not only do we have proper conversations (I counted an 11 word sentence recently!), she has been out of nappies since the summer and can practically dress herself! Having read Topsy and Tim have a Birthday Party, the only thing she said when I asked her what she wanted for her party was to play Pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey! So I decided that we would go for a retro birthday party, just like the ones I had when I was young. I found this perfect Pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey set from Belle and Boo whose nostalgic illustrations are just so beautiful and remind me of books I had as a child. It had been designed brilliantly with a choice of boy or girl rider for the donkey, a blindfold and 2 sheets of tails and name stickers. Darcey absolutely LOVED it! It was so perfect for my retro inspired birthday that I also bought the Belle and Boo invitations, tablecloth, paper plates and napkins.
I then had to think of a retro cake and I remembered the classic chocolate hedgehog. There are lots of versions of this but I went for one using chocolate buttons instead of fingers for the spines.
I then tried to remember all the sorts of food we used to have at my birthday parties in the late 70s. So we created a feast of cheese & pineapple on sticks, a rabbit jelly, cocktail sausages, Hula Hoops and Iced Gems.
I also liked the fact that there was an underlying woodland animal theme for the party so I couldn't resist making toadstool cake pops and I persuaded my dad, who is a brilliant bread maker, to make wonderful hedgehog rolls.
Darcey definitely enjoyed her very special party and I enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
